Default Little Offroad Trailer Build

Felt like doing a bit more fabricating, so decided to build an offroad trailer
It will be a 1500 x 1200 or close to 5x4.

Will be fitted with a roof top tent, water tank etc as funds allow. this will probably take a while to build as no real hurry and as usual will be away for work a lot this year.

Picked up some steel, and axle, hubs and springs

Chassis is 50x50x3mm, drawbar 75x50x3mm.

Just using basic tools
hehehe I have a few Ozito tools. they go ok for what I do. I used a 100mm angle grinder for my rear bar. It finally broke off the locking button. Found the receipt, took it back and got a new one.

I bought one of these when I made the sliders.

Over the past few weekends, have done up the basic frame

Some of the welds using a cheap 120A inverter welder

Spring hangers in place. I used basic 3 leaf springs with hangers. Don't plan on carrying a huge amount of weight. The trailer will end up reasonably heavy due to materials used, but hopefully will be very strong.

The frame on top is a combination of 50x50x3mm and 50x50x2mm for the verticals and 50x25x2.5mm

jacked the Xj up and took the wheels off to fit on the trailer to check height

The drawbar will be tied in with the spring hangers.

back on stands with the floor in (2.1mm treadplate)

Using the old alloy stock rims, wich should allow a track width similar to the XJ. I would prefer to get some stock steelies though.

Made up the tailgate with left over treadplace and 50x3mm angle. previously had been down to the rubber shop to get a selection of different rubber seal types to see what suited best before making it.

It is a swingout style. later I will make a plywood kitchen to bolt on.

Still have a lot of cleaning up of some of the welds.

OH NO looks like the trailer has stolen your rear wheels of the XJ!

Nice work there, amazing what you can do with basic tools, skill and patience, some very good looking fabrication.
Good that a camper like this can be built/added to/modified as you find the needs arise.
I'll be watching this thread.

Yep, this will be a work in progress. So far including new 45mm square axle, springs, kit for it, hubs, 59lt water tank, led lights and steel it has cost about $1050. Probably another $150 or so for more steel for the sides and guards, $310 for tregg hitch, and ???? for 31x10.5 tyres (depending on what I get). paint another $200.
I priced some new 6 or 7x 5 trailers and they are $1800 minimum and pretty light duty. A fair few more $$$$ req'd to modify for offroad and still not as strong.
