We’ve known for sometime that the next-generation Jeep Wrangler is coming, but we haven’t be able to get many details from Jeep about how the 2018 Wrangler JL might look. Well, we just got our hands on photos of a four-door 2018 Wrangler testing in heavy covering just outside of Auburn Hills, Michigan.
While it may look very similar to the outgoing JK Wrangler, there have been several changes that aren’t hard to miss. The front end is significantly longer than the outgoing Wrangler, and the windshield appears to have more rearward lean for aerodynamics.
The biggest change we can see even under heavy wrapping is the bulging front fenders, which gives the front end a much wider appearance.
Regardless of how well the appearance of the JL is taken, the good news is it will still have solid axles front and rear, which means the IFS rumors can end. While no technical specs have emerged from Jeep regarding the JL, we do know that the Pentastar V-6 will be the main engine for the chassis and a diesel powerplant will also be available in North America.
We know Jeep has been making changes to save weight to continue to meet fuel economy standards and has to contend with ever increasing safety regulations. That said, despite these changes, Jeep says that the off-road prowess of the Wrangler will not suffer but will, in fact, be better.
We’re going to have to wait a little while longer to see the JL in the buff, but as soon as we do, we’ll let you see it as well. The best part of this new Jeep platform is still to come: the Wrangler based pickup. Stay tuned to fourwheeler.com for all the breaking Jeep news.
