Default Rear Main Seal leak - how to tell

Thanks brains trust- I’ve been told rear main seal is leaking.
I’ve taken the bash plates off & there is a moist black oil film all over the sump 360 degrees around, nothing specific to rear end of motor. It is not leaving oil on the ground.
How can I check if it is the rear main seal leaking?
CRD 240,000 km
Thanks.

Probably only way is to give it a good clean and wipe it all down. Check on where is seems to be coming from over the next few days. Oil finds a way down and the problem with rms and sump is when you are driving it blows all around the place with the airflow and u less keeping it clean you can never tell for sure.

Diesels will usually have some oil dripping somewhere.
If it's the rear main, from my experience, once they go, you'll notice it pretty quick, they go hard and don't seal and leak all over the place. I had one that went from a drip to leaving a pool under the car pretty quickly

Is the seal failing- at high kms, a sign of a blocked pcv system and/or increased blow-by from the rings?

Thanks.
Doesnt sound like RMS. If it leaks you will have a leak where the bell housing attaches to the plate at the back of the engine. There is a good thread on lostjeep by thesameguy who recently replaced the RMS and other things. The new seal is not perfect. It is posible that the seal carrier has a loose bolt and is leaking. The housing is similar to the XJ diesel. There are a couple of Orings as well.
A good clean is the first thing to do to determine where the oil is originating from.

Thanks for advice. Provent fitted & seems to be catching oil as it should so think there's high chamber pressure. I'll give the base of the engine a good clean as suggested and go from there. Bell housing/block join is dry at present.

Manual or auto? My rear main seal went on my manual and there was always oil coming out front of the bell housing. If it is an auto, is there an outlet where it would show? Not sure how the torque converters all go together.
