Default NSW Hunter Valley to Elliston, SA- Best route?

Gday all, i'm heading out to SA in about 6 weeks. I have just ordered a lift from wooders and will be all done by the time i leave. with the locker and new tyres, i'd like to test the car out a little and finally see some the real Australia!

The plan is to leave the hunter on saturday am (bumcrack of dawn) and be in elliston by 9am monday morning ready for a hard weeks fishing. so it gives 2 days to get 1800km. tight i know, but the first 1200km will bve pretty easy.

I was hoping to go in via the gawler ranges (a quick drive through) and on the return (leaving sunday pm and dont need to be back in the hunter until thursday), so was hoping to take 3 days, maybe 4 and visit the salt lakes etc. i'll have all the camping kit i require, and dont mind roughing it, but driving half way across australia, i HAVE to do some proper sightseeing!

For the record my effective fuel range atm is approx 1500km, so remote distance isnt really an issue.

i know it well. kind of the wrong direction though. at the moment its looking like i'll stay on the hard stuff until the return trip, then doing a big 500k loop towards woomera. should be some rough stuff out near the lakes somewhere!

Seeing as you're so close, have a look at Googs track when you're hading back after Elliston.
Nothing overly challenging, just sand dune after sand dune after sand dune heading north from near Ceduna up to around Glendambo way.
Pretty remote.
