Default Mercedes Benz 3.0 CRD Engine Oil Recommendations

Hey all.

Sorry if I'm covering old ground here, but I can't use the search function on my phone and I am trying to buy some parts ASAP.

What engine oil and filters do the learned folk of the forum use and recommend for the MB 3.0 CRD?

From what I understand I need an oil which complies to a minimum of MB 229.31 (MB 229.51 is also OK), ACEA A3/B4 and most importantly C3 for the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). 5W-30 is recommended in the owner's manual, but apparently MB recommend 5W-40 to prevent excessive crankcase vapours/oil mist.

My Commander is due for its first service (under my ownership) @ 123,000km and the service records indicate that on the last 3 services they used Valvoline Synpower MST full synthetic 5W-30 priced @ $20 per litre on the invoice. What concerns me is that on 2 previous services they listed Valvoline Durablend 5W-30 @ $10 per litre. This oil is non-compliant with MB Specs.

Anyway, I'd appreciate some assistance before I drown myself in oil.....

Cheers,
Hanna

I'm using Valvoline SYN power MST 5w-30 without issue, change oil every 7000km give or take & don't need to top up between changes.

Filter MANN p/n HU821x, if you but an original filter it will have MANN printed on it

Super Cheap have 25% off all Synthetic oils this weekend.

I've been using Penrite Enviro 5w 40 for a few years now with no issues, it's a fully synthetic long drain oil and I normally change mine between 5000 and 10000k..depends on how much towing and highway driving I have been doing. I normally get it from Supercheap when it's on special and store it till the next oil change.

I guess as long as it's a quality full synthetic like Valvolene, Nulon, Liqui Moly comes back to personal choice as to which brand I think. Personally I prefer fully synthetic and I believe Mercedes recommends this for their engines.

Engine oil like the others buy when Supercheap has 20% off.
Fully Synthetic 5-40
I have used based on the best price at the time.
Mobil
Nulon
Castrol
Penrite.
Valveoline

Every 2nd oil change I do Transmission, diffs, (tending to stay with Nulon for these ) power steering reservoir , transfer case (mobil 424) and air / fuel filter.
