As this is a Merc engine (model OM647) used in many other makes that have relationships with MB. The guy new of the top of his head that this engine(AKA Sprinter engine) there is a flat section on the block just above the starter motor towards the bell housing, this is where the number will be, he also said it is very difficult to read !

Just had mine up on the ramps and if theres any number on the engine near the starter then I may have to lift the engine out to read it, think I will just stick to the numbers after the 4Y in the vin number. Have to give the Transport fella a mirror on a bendy stick.

Yep, I,m with you guys, I found the spot (at the end of a torch beam) no way to get close enough to read anything legible. I'll just hand it to the inspector and say "Its down there !"

Sorry turbomart the UK WJ/G does use the 2.7 Mercedes engine, I've got one. I think the 3.1VM was used in an earlier model.

Default Post revival: WG 2.7 CRD Engine number location

To anyone struggling to find the engine serial number location on the Mercedes OM612 in a WG Grand Cherokee, it is on the RHS on a machined surface just above the sump gasket.
It is just below the cast engine part number, which will begin with 612 for the engine type.
