Default Automatic Gear Selector Button

I've always wondered what the button on an automatic gear selector is for:

I can't find any reference to it in the manual.

Anyone know?

That button locks you out of park, reverse, and usually a bottom gear.
In order to change in to reverse, the driver needs to push the button. Same to get in to park, and usually the same to get into the lowest gear. This reduces the chance of accidentally selecting park, reverse, or a low gear. This is needed because the gear selector you have pictured simply moves in a straight line.
Another way to achieve this is by making the driver zigzag through the gear selections, which is what I have in my 2013 JKU Wrangler.
This begs the question, from what vehicle is your picture?

If it's like any other auto then it locks the shifter when in Park so it can't be knocked out potentially making the vehicle roll away.

You push it in to move it out of Park to select gears.

I'm not 100% sure what vehicle this is from (I just found the image on the Internets) but it is strikingly similar to my 2007 JKU.

Here is a (very poor) image from the manual:

(note it's a Left-hand drive vehicle depicted)

I haven't noticed a need to press in the button when engaging or dis engaging park but it is placed such that you automatically press it in regardless.

The manual does go to lengths to explain that the brake must be depressed in order to dis engage park but makes no mention of the button. I'll have to test it out when my JK's up and running again.

Except it from a Left Hand Drive model The " button" is on the other side on a RHD JK.... and you can just see part of the Steering Wheel.

Jeep don't bother to do a RHD and LHD version
