Even though i have rebuilt the distributor, i believe that i need a backup one for the future.
When it was chirping, i went into full research mode and looked at alternatives.

There are basically two alternatives.
Go for a cheaper model like Spectra, Cardone, WPS, Omix-ada, Crown etc...or go for a super expensive model like MSD at over $350 USD.

You cannot get Mopar anymore as they are not made. In fact, Mopar did not make distributors for the 1995 XJ Cherokee. A company called Sagem made them (check out the sticker on the side of most OEM distributors). Sagem stopped making distributors years ago, hence you cannot buy an original new one with part number 56027028.
All the cheap ones are made in China (no problem with that), but can have quality issues.

Anyway, on my search through Ebay USA, a guy was spruiking a genuine Sagem 56027028 ex government distributor. It is brand new but does not look genuine. I offered him $25 USD and the offer was accepted. Whether it is genuine or not, a brand new spare distributor for that price (and cheap shipping too) was worth it to me.

Happy hunting.

Cheers,

really excellent writeup.

Do you reckon a few drops of oil on the distributor shaft during a regular service would work down the shaft into the bush ?

I know such a service routine is mandated on some older vehicles I have seen, presumably that would be the only reason I can think of to do such a thing

There is a YouTube video of a guy doing exactly that Tony. He uses WD40, but it is only a short term solution. Mine had some rust and gunk on it that really needed cleaning off.
I would say to put some oil or WD40 down there short term, then strip and clean/grease it medium term, and if the bush is worn, a replacement distributor is cheap enough.

I'd say the bronze bushes used on the distributor shafts are similar to these:

Good work TR. I am sure that if your distributor was worn, you can get a bush made, or even after measuring up the old one, find one that would fit straight in. Would be worth having an old good quality Sagem one to pull apart and measure everything up.

Cheers for the info..
