Default '96 XJ Manifold Studs

I'm in the midst of replacing the exhaust manifold, engine mounts and fuel injectors on my 96 XJ; and would like some help re the studs/dowels.
I have replacement manifold bolts and studs, and am pleased that I managed to get all the bolts out today without issue - other than my back - but was surprised to find the studs without external thread or nuts...I was led to believe they would have these...can anyone shed light on this please?
I'm a newbie, and rather ignorant of the Jeep world; which is why I went to great lengths to be prepared for this project.
Should I replace them, and if so how are they best removed?
Are the studs/dowels without external thread stock?

Thanks for any words of wisdom,
Jude.

Default dowels

Been a while since I did a head gasket on my jeep.
Looked at some pics on line and there appears to be 2 locating dowels for aligning the inlet manifold. Just leave them in, no need to replace them.

Yeah cheers...I was just concerned that as the replacement bolt set I got had two threaded studs with nuts included; that they were what was supposed to be there.

Default studs

They could be used there.
Wouldn't be the first time I have replaced locating dowels with studs.
If you want to replace them use a quality set of vise grips clamped down as tight as you can and they should undo.

I know on my '98 heads there are two suds. One at each end and the rest are bolts. Maybe you have a set that does later heads as well. There could be dowels under 2 and 5. on yours.
