A couple of things come to mind here:
Yes the Toyota idea was a stupid thing to say, don't even joke about it. You would be better served by selling it off and buying a Patrol.
If something mechanical has failed then most of the mentioned tests, whether by you or a mechanic, will do further damage as they involve rotating the reciprocating components. A camera scope would be a wiser investigation.
Getting a generic mechanic to look at it, whether at his shop or your house, could be no better than the NRMA guy as they are normally mechanics anyway. Make sure they know Jeeps or go to a Jeep workshop or you could be wasting time and money.
Without actually hearing it in person, could it still be fuel related. Many engines if firing badly or only on a couple of cylinders can sound pretty crap. Especially if firing in an unbalanced pattern. Are you sure it's all 4 on the one bank.
Plenty of things to check after doing a visual inspection down the bores.
Swapping coil packs around. Good diagnostic tool that can fire the injectors without running the engine. etc etc.
I wonder if it could have stripped a keyway on the cam. Still none of this mechanical stuff ties in with it coming good and then going to $h!t again.
