Default Winch Service Repairs

Hello experts, I got stuck in a bog hole about a metre deep a while ago. The winch was well underwater for at least 10 minutes and water got into the clutch lever side.

I'm having trouble changing the lever position and decided to open the side up, this is what I see! So much for one of the top of the range brands. Not water proof obviously, just makes me think that the snorkle could be a dangerous thing! It makes you forget about the other important parts. Winch, axle and tranny breathers, electric sway bar disconnects, holey airbox. Silly me of course for NOT taking the winch into account prior. Better than crossing a flooded causeway and get taken away by strong currents but still baaaad.

Do I need to take the winch off and do a complete overhaul or do I just clean it up, let it dry and grease it up? Any water repellent anti corrosion spray?

Thanks

Use degreaser and remove as much mud and rust as possible from gearbox. Maybe lightly use a wire brush too. Sit in a sunny warm place and make sure it's dry. Reassemble with a decent amount of grease.

Motor is a bit more difficult. Is it muddy too? Again remove as much mud and corrosion as possible. There are a few different products available for protecting motors. Someone else will know more than me.

Sub'd . I may have to clean mine out one day.

inox spray may be good for the internals. It displaces, lubricates, penetrates and protects

I think so Chris. I had a peep deep inside the drum and looks like some parts are rusting. I don't have time to fully service it so I think I will take your advise and clean the side up, grease the parts back up, let them dry best I can and them do a proper job.

Bought this on eBay, Ormeau, to spray the winch and other electrical contacts including mobile phone, camera, shoes.

Clean as best you can.
Unleaded petrol is good but not good to get on your hands, tooth brush is good for cleaning gears.
After cleaning & drying as best you can, a final rinse with metho (metholated spirits) will get rid of any residual moisture. The motor can be cleaned with metho as well.
Put it back together with grease, EP is good, if you can get waterproof EP, even better.
plenty of silicone on joints etc.

Thanks Layback. Isn't EP for concrete and masonry? How do you apply it ? On the insides or the seals?
