2.5 TD Rocker/Valve Cover Gasket
Hi,
The Rocker/Valve cover on my 99 2.5 Diesel XJ is weeping a fair bit so am looking to replace it. Thought it would be simple but looking at it now there a quite a few coolant pipes across the top, Has anyone done this, how difficult/easy is it, do you have to drain the coolant and remove those pipes or can it be slid out underneath?

it is not difficult to remove and replace those pipes, they are for the heater. Do you know what heater core a '97 2.5 turbo diesel takes? They are extremely expensive here. I can get one from the USA for between $100 and $270 depending on the type. They are saying I need the one from a '97-'99 TJ Wrangler. Any ideas?

You dont need to drain all the coolant. Just disconnect the pipes& put them out of the way. There will be a little coolant come out & I guess you could catch it in a container & re-use. When was the last time you changed your coolant?
Gasket change is not that hard. Discussing what ,if anything to put on the gasket may cause 1,000 posts with personal opinions.
Most important thing is to make sure the surfaces are clean & free from oil before you put it back together.

If your interested, I believe I have 2 gaskests at home. They arnt cheap to buy think jeep wanted about $100. If your interested and if I do still have them $40 plus postage.

i am in the UK, and got a gasket for 5 GBP, which is about 8 AUD (the price u guys pay is shocking) .
Anyway's came to fit it and the first bolt i came across was loose. not even finger tight really, so thinking it might be the source of the oil loss and don't need a gasket after all ... does anyone know what torque the rocker cover bolt pictured below should be? I am taking it shouldn't be hand loose ?

yes very pricey over here.
bolts should be
19 N-m or
168 in.lbs

finally got round to this job, cleaning up valve cover now, do you put gasket sealant on both sides of the the new gasket or just one?
