Default What oil do you use?

I know these jeeps should use 5w30, but I was recently told by someone that I should use the thicker 5w40 because I have over 170ks on the engine, is that right?

170000 isn't a lot of k's in the great scheme of things, what's your oil pressure like with 5W30? If it's fine continue to use it, if it's getting a bit low then move up to a 10W40.

Not sure what the oil pressure is, How much thicker is 5w40 compared to both 5w30 and 10w40? Is it in between?

Oh, you don't have a oil pressure gauge?

Ok, oil figures come in 2 parts, and they refer to the ability for the oil to flow, using water as a reference.
So, 0W30 for example behaves like water when cool, and like a 30 weight oil at operating temp.
During summer, I run 15W40, during winter I run 5W40. And I also run Nulon in all of my motors.

So to use the examples you provided, 5W40 is one step thicker at operating temp than the 5W30.

Does your car burn any oil? If so, how much over a given amount of time?

I see, thanks for the info. But i'm not really sure how much it burns as I just got the car a few weeks ago. I have it in for an oil and oil filter change today. So I will let it run for a few weeks while checking the dipstick daily and get back to you.

Exactly. If you have time, take it out for a long country drive, 500km say, on the highway. Check your oil level before you leave, and again on Monday morning before heading off to work. That is the time you would expect to see it burn a bit of oil, if the two levels are the same you don't need to worry about changing oil weights, if it changes noticeably after that drive then yes, it's possibly worth going up a weight in oil at the next change.

Doug.
