set the unit up today and had a closer inspection at the unit
I pulled the cover off as I wanted to see what the build quality was like on the inside (photos attached) as i had googled "chinese plasma cutter" befor buying one and read a few bad reviews about loose conections and wires not properly crimped. The following are this I noticed, I have nothing to compare it to so you could find the same things with the more expensive plasma cutters
- one of the screws supplied to bolt the bracket for the regulator/air cleaner to the unit had no thread on it
- one of the 6 screws used to hold the cover on the unit was different to the rest. The units are apparently checked in australia, badged as proweld and then on sold. Im going to asume this is because who ever removed the cov er to check the insidesprobably striped the thread
- all the conections where crimped then soldered well but some of the pieces on the circuit board wernt soldered on stright (pics attached). I havent pulled electrical equipment apart since I was a kid so im not sure if this is normal for mass produced electrical equipemnt, its just something I noticed
- one of the brackets that holds one of the circuit boards is alittle short causing the board to have a bend in it. this cant be good over time so I will adjust this befor I put the u nit to good work
the dial for the apms only goes to 45 but the digital read out says 50 go figure
- torch seems well put together, the only issue I could seem myself having in the long run misht be the little sprind for the trigger failing or falling out
first thoughts after my first cut was I should of brought one ages ago. The unit is easy to use and very quick to cut through 5mm plate. Its going to be great to have a tool that can cut any shape you want with the push of a button. The cut was very clean at 20-25 amps and at 50 the edge would only need a quick grind to clean it up. Controlling and moving the torch steadily will take some practice but thats to be expected.
Whats next:
- weld up alittle car for it to sit on, then buy a small compressor to sit underneath so im not going to have to run air lines all over the shed
- fabup a cutting bench that has a straight edge to guide the torch for those perfectly straight cuts
