i have a noise in the front diff thats intermitant. its almost sounds like the sound you hear when a tyre lug is rubbing, but its now.

anyone had issues with that type of thing?

Just guessing but maybe a front axle uni-joint, the ones just behind the front brakes?

If you have been playing in muddy water a bit I would be looking at the front bearings. They are sealed for life and must be replaced as a whole and getting them in from the States seems to be the cheapest way instead of the Jeep dealer. No bearing place carrys them as far as I know.
Jack up the front end and rotate the wheel to feel any roughness or noise or play.

James, I had a similar issue with my XJ a few months back, the noise was similar to having a stone stuck in the tyre tread, more pronounced when driving at 80km plus and when turning slightly, RACQ diagnosed a carrier bearing but suggested I visit a specialist, went to Difflapping in Slacks Ck, (Allgas St) they couldnt find it until they used special listening equipment...it was front bearing, grease had been thrown out, bearing stuffed.....cost $600 flaming bucks, have since found out that it may be possible to buy seperate bearings instead of whloe hub, try Hammond.

Just a thought... try the easy things first.

Check there isn't something bad with your front disk rotors or pads. Maybe a stone stuck in there?

well they couldnt fault the front diff noise. will have to keep and eye on things when i go away me thinks. sure while on hols @ the jambo will be in good hands if it plays up.
