Most people buy new Discos, Prados, Rangies, Patrols for the dream that one day they may need to get dirty.
(Jeep Wranglers are a notable exception, with 60% reported to go offroad, and 80% of Rubi drivers)
Older cars are much more likely to see a trail, therefore the more capable out of the factory models attract better resale, especially unmodded examples.
As an example a guy in my office bought a prado for $66K with heaps of kit and he's kept it pristine. Its now 3.5 years old and he has just been offered $49K as a trade on the new model.
