Default A few JK questions (CRD 2008)

Hi All,

A little background on the Jeep. It is JKU 2008 CRD soft-top converted to a hard top. Picked up secondhand with just under 300K on the clock. So she's been around the block a few times.

Q1: Shortly after the oil change I had the oil warning and another light come on telling me there was an issue with the oil. It went away after resting the car for an hour and hasn't come back. People suggest this is due to the oil filter not being the correct flow type. So wondering what people of Australia use for the CRD that is commonly off the shelf?

Q2: I had a the ABS sensor warning lights appear yesterday during highway driving. I am not near my jeep to diagnose until later in the week with the ODBII tool but reading the forums would suggest that it is probably the ABS sensors or worst case need some new hubs. But planning on looking into it further this weekend. A quick search of the web tells me I can pick-up sensors for the JK model but they all reference the petrol model not the diesel model. I assume they are the same but wanted to confirm from some one before laying out the cash. Also are the EBay ones ok or should I be looking for a jeep part specialist.

Q3: Finally the steering has a tiny bit of play in it so I will be looking at doing the front-end, tie rods plus anything else warn down in that area. Suggestions on the best place to pick-up these parts.

Q4: Where do you all get your parts?

I am located in Brisbane but don't mind having to source over the internet.

Thanks heaps.

Q2: Most commonly it could be one of the ABS sensors, damaged if mud and dirt got into it or their plugs and wiring might be damaged but the ESP will also get tripped up in the same way if the steering wheel is misaligned (not pointing ahead when the wheels are straight), which is reasonably easy to fix in your driveway. I don't know of an OBD2 reader that can tell you if it's a sensor or what sensor is the problem but there is a "reset" sequence you can do (i.e. turn the key to Acc, pump the throttle, face North, stand on one leg, etc.) and a sensor-related problem will trip it up reasonably quickly afterwards but other causes will only show up after a bit of driving.

Q3: It's possibly shot ball joints but it may also just be play in the steering box - the JK has never had the tightest steering feel. An easy way to check what's loose or moving is to get someone to turn the steering wheel side to side while you check the ball joints, pitman arm, etc. If you are on your own, prop your phone up and record a video while you turn the wheel. Youtube videos are probably the easiest way to see how much movement is normal in each component.

Q4: I buy most accessories and mods from www.sbroffroad.com.au or www.JeepKonection.com.au and parts from www.rockauto.com. There are a couple of shops that have popped up in Brisbane and GC selling sometimes sub-standard JK accessories and mods like front bars that bend easily and rust quickly - I stick to the online stores that have never steered me wrong.

Thanks for the links, they will be helpful moving forward. The JK is back in the drive and I ran the diag tools on it. Throwing a P0652, which is a low voltage on the ECU output to a bunch of sensors. So I will trace that to make sure it isn't wiring related short. Interesting enough the third step, after replacing APP and other sensors is to replace the Oil Pressure Sensor. Which was throwing an error on the dash, but no code error in the diag tool.

So either one of the other sensors is stuffed, dragging the voltage down (short) or the more likely thing is a broken OPS. But given the age there could be also periodic short due to the old wiring harness.

At least I know where to look this weekend. Will report back if I work it out.
