Default PSF - noddy question

Can someone just tell me authoritatively what power steering fluid to use please... now done so much checking/ reading and been sucked down the rabbit hole of forum arguments.

I don't wish to just trust what's in there already.

My xj registered Jan' 01, manufactured 2000, service manual says use the mopar PSF (clear stuff), no longer available, Mopar spec seems to mention MS5931 (?).... which seems to have no relevance for modern PSF specs... I find only "CHF7.1,202', '11s' (eg yellow stuff) or Honda fluids (no idea)...

pls put me out of my misery

I used Penrite power steering fluid, which has the same spec as my '96 power fluid

It is generally accepted that ATF is ok, but I prefer to use a fluid that is specced, the main issue being power steering runs at up to +1000psi, wheras auto trans 300psi

got a 1 litre bottle from Supercheap Auto for about $20

suctioned the existing fluid out.

It made my PS run noticeably quieter

think I've worked it out- ATF & PASF use same base but different additives/ lubricants/ detergents etc. So different impact on PAS seals/ squeals/ shear (to the 300 v 1000 psi point).

AWG I saw Penrite confusingly does a *'Power Steering Fluid' (vehicles taking ATF/Dexron) and *'PAS Fluid' (vehicles taking synthetic/other PAS fluids).

I dont have Penrite here, but gonna use Prestone Power Steering Fluid; seems to cover the right specs.

Not the most exciting topic, but seems to be a large amount of online chat on it.

Mine's had regular ATF in it since... as long as I can recall. In recent times my power steering has been groaning when turning right at slow speeds, like exiting a car park. Since swapping out a litre of the old fluid for a litre of the Penrite PAS, the groaning as completely stopped...
I'll do it again with another litre of PAS to try and get it as cleared out as possible, but seems the different fluid makes a solid difference for mine.
