Check out my Ride(s)
Default Ok so ive been putting this off for 20 years

i have a '94 XJ limited with 4.0l and the dreaded rear main seal leak.

i had a look at fixing it about 20 years ago and chickened out, but now its at a point it can't be ignored, unfortunately im also 20 years older.

my question is, as the vehicle now has high miles and the crank is probably well scored, is there an oversize seal or seal that uses a slightly different running surface.

as the car now has lift and 31 inch tyres its not as hard a job as it once was

any suggestions for a seal greatly appreciated

thanks

Sorry, the news is not good.

I have just reconditioned my motor (Jeeping again ZJ forum) and I had my motor on a engine stand with the block upside down, crankshaft fitted I thought it would be an easy fit like I did with my XJ 4 years ago. Wrong. The new seal has a lip on the inside which is a tight fit and it would only slide around about 2 centimeters before it jammed up. My fix was to remove the crankshaft and fit it with my fingers. There is a Utube video showing the procedure.

Shop around, you may still be able to get the old style.

Failing that, and if you are adventurous you could drop the crank while still in the car, but if you are going to do that it might be easier to remove the motor and do the other seals. (OR, give it to somebody and say "Fix it!)

I did it in a WG 4.0 in the car recently the engine has around 340,000kms and it was reasonably easy task, it worked now 100% leak tight, it was a felpro seal.

I did mine a couple of years ago.. didn't even think much of it. Very easy job. With your lift, allow a full Saturday morning or around 4 hours.
Lots of YouTube vids on it. I have lots of pics on the job i did on my 95 XJ 4.0. I think i used a Mopar seal, punch, black RTV and a Felpro blue sump gasket that comes with the pegs so that you can easily mount the new one. Search in the XJ section for my VSB14 thread. I have a few handy tips in there. My donk was over 330,000 kms and doesn't leak at all now. Its a great design as its so easy to remove the old one and replace with a QUALITY new one.

Here are a few pics from my thread.

Hope these help. Good luck with it. Just make sure you have all the parts first and have watched a few videos.
Cheers,

Just going through my Rockauto receipt and the part I got was Enginetech S0591 Crankshaft seal double lip. It is not the normal orange colour of the old seal. The older cheaper seal is still available on ebay.

Sorry for any confusion.
