That sounds like fun! Unfortunately there are two issues with that:

1) The threaded section is still in there...

2) I have removed too many components to allow the engine to start...fuel filter, multiple electronic cables disconnected, alternator, turbo house and turbo manifold....thing....looks like a carby inside...

Will give me a great opportunity to clean all this stuff but apart from that, cars is not going anywhere right now except on the back of a truck..

now you have me intrigued, normally when the GP sticks, the threaded bit unscrews & leaves the element part ln the head.
Have you unscrewed the end & it wont pull out? If so put lots of atf around it so it leaks down & softens the carbon that is making it stick.
Its not stuck until the tip breaks off.

No this is not what has happened. When I turned the socket wrench, the head of the plug twisted straight off the body. As a consequence, the 'body' of the plug which includes the tube that houses the element and the rod on the end which sticks into the chamber is still in the engine block.

If none of the above made any sense please see the attached photo. This shows the three successfully removed plugs and the one, not so successful one...

Ok, never seen that happen before. Normally the threaded part comes out & leaves the bottom bit in the hole.
I wouldnt be taking the head off yet.
A good tradesman should be able to drill down through the threaded bit, then extract the offending bit. If the thread in the head is damaged, a helicoil maybe needed. Make sure you use anti-seize when you put the GP's back.

I have a feeling you're right. Car is getting towed to my mechanic tomorrow (5 mins from my place) and he will give it a red hot go. Will try exactly what you mentioned. If he gets it out, I will kiss him...may never want to work on my car again after that...

the issue is that if you take the head off, you still dont have easy access to the other end of the GP.
If he is good, he will be able to do it.
My suggestion would be ~ injector out , at top dead center, blowing air down the injector hole so that any metal fragments are blown out as its drilled, very slow speed drill.

this is exactly what happened to my Diesel XJ,
I removed the head, and drilled the hole out then screwed in a this coil thing, similar to a heli coil but its solid, tapered and screws making its own thread, then the glow plug screws in this little cool coil thingo

this is one here
