Yes i will need it, Given the location of the oil filter. I do plan on getting serious about "wheeling" I'm joining the local 4wd club and already been on one outing with them and even with a 2" lift it still bumped and scraped everywhere and i was very anxious about the filter the whole time.

Would 5mm alloy do the trick if it was over a skeleton?
I was thinking of making my own frame out of 20mm rhs and riveting alloy to it.

No idea, there isn't much room between the bash plate and the transmission pan on mine. If you build one better make sure it will support the vehicle hung up on a rock and not just bend and damage the pan. Don't go off road till you have a solution. Your CRD should have come with a front engine bash plate, I hope you have that one - they were standard equipment.

Have a look here:

http://www.jeep4x4center.com/jeep-sk...skidplates.htm

Morris 4x4 in the US has the full set still available from their online shop. You can see exactly what the transmission plate looks like in the photo there. It is a double skin steel plate that has corrugations stamped into each piece and then it is welded together - it will support the vehicle across the span between the engine and transmission cross members. It will cost you more in shipping than they are asking but it might be worth it to you.

Be aware that the Jeep stock transmission plate (as shown at Morris), does not protect the oil filter very well (it does protect the transmisison pan well) - I had to weld a wing on mine to extend protection over the length of the oil filter.

Give TJM a call. They will get it for you and fit it straight away. I called them up and I got $500 quoted for supply and fitting. Just takes 1 hour to fit apparently.
