Talking Rear Spare Tyre Carrier

Who wouldn't want to get the spare out of the back and free up some ROOM
I have been thinking about this for ages Unless you want to spend $ or are good with Metalwork Its almost a dream
Yes you can chuck your spare in the roof cage Too much for me with my disability so I have been looking on the internet for plans/ideas
I found some plans for $39 USD for a bumper and swing gate so many triangles to get the bumper shape the dude up at the welding works would charge me a fortune I found a tow bar mounted idea it would be cheap to make but be a pain to open the tail gate (Pics Included)
I saw another one that was swing off the tow bar but cant find any info/pics now .
I will draw it up and scan it so I can show you the idea
Anyone got any ideas?..... We would all love one

I’ve thought about this. I took the wheel off the tailgate of my TJ, never liked the weight on it. The only thing I would say is the wheel hanging off there is quite heavy so the device needs to be (over?) engineered properly. This one is $600 but I really like the design and build quality - https://mirack.com.au/product/xt-til...wheel-carrier/

Been thinking too. If you never do any heavy stuff I wonder how a slimline spare would go, you know the ones you get on modern cars now. IIRC I only had one flat in 30 years of 4x4ing.

I’ve been going through this process the past couple of weeks - eBay and gumtree. The problem is the space saver type spares for some reason are bloody expensive for what they are. I actually have one from my past Q7 which was written off in a Flood. It is really heavy and you need an air compressor available to inflate it.

The option is find a suitable sized Ford rim with correct load rating and put a cheap tyre on it but yes you still have the storage situation.

I would never willingly use a space saver tyre on a vehicle that you might ever have to drive more than a few kms (for a replacement tyre or repair)

If I ever had to drive long distances or on dirt roads, I would not consider a space saver on an XJ

I agree with space savers - ok for around town to get to Tyre place but not great for distance, highways or any form of speed or towing.

What are your thoughts on a bicycle tyre as a spare?
