Jeep do not make their own clutches.
A high-quality aftermarket is probably going to be better than the original.
With the gearbox out, its a good time to replace any parts that may be on the way out. RMS is a good example.
When I replaced my clutch on my XJ, I did it because the RMS had to be replaced. The clutch plate did not have much left. The new one has done over 200,000km with no sign of ware.

Banshee... or Humdingerslammer??? Your mechanic will probably be able to source all the parts for you at cost and say 10% for their time to source. He will know suppliers... prob can get a lot of this stuff via Repco, Autobahn etc.

I think you meant humdingerslammer, there!

Parts aren't always about mechanic markup. It's also a warranty consideration. If the mech does all the work & sources the parts, then they are the one to worry about it all. If you supply parts & it fails soon, then it could be the part, or it could be the mechanic not installing it correctly, and it can turn into a finger pointing competition where you are the only loser.

Having said that, I'll get parts myself if I want certain aftermarket ones, (or especially OEM parts), since buying from FCA can involve a ~500% markup on cost of a part shipped from say Rockauto in the USA.

If you have a mechanic who will use good aftermarket rather than FCA parts, I'd probably do that.

I've got a Centerforce in mine. Had a rattle start to come back fairly soon after, then it started feeling strange & the slave cylinder failed. (It was replaced with the clutch.) It seems to have doused the clutch in DOT3, which started pulsing & has now completely failed after ~30,000km. Replaced the master & slave cylinders and now I'm not sure if it's air in the line that I cannot purge, or the clutch itself. Either way, I'm on the hook for another replacement as soon as I have the money. I have some of the parts, but I don't think I'll bother with another Centerforce, I'll just have the mech used his standard Exidy aftermarket ones.

In the meantime I can't really drive it easily, since I have to turn it off approaching traffic lights & start in 1st to get going again... (I learnt to change gears no clutch long ago, so that's not a big issue.)

The centreforce clutch has centrifugal weights that exert proportional force on the clutch/flywheel etc and thus makes it hold stronger. These weights can cause a rattle when in idle, in particular. At faster speeds they hold in place without noise.

Could be air in the line but this would have dissipated by now, surely. Pulsing might be due to the clutch fluid being on the clutch plate etc and causing it to slip/not bind properly.

I am on my 2nd centreforce clutch and I must say that I have been more than happy with both of them... more binding/holding power. Each has done more than the OE (80000km).cThe first Centreforce was changed after 116000km (but still good for another 20-30K). The current one has done 67000km and when it was stripped down to replace RMS at 50000km there was narry a mark on it or the flywheel.

The clutch slave cylinder (OE) was replaced 12000km after first clutch replacement and I changed this one at same time as second (current) clutch replacement. I also have changed the OE clutch master cylinder at 250000km.

A CF clutch at the moment is very exxy (about $1000US plus postage say $150US for a full kit that includes a flywheel) which would make it about $1700 Aus or thereabouts. I bought mine when they were nowhere near that price. There are much cheaper ones available in Australia that will do just as good a job. Exceedy seems to be OK.

Is the rattle from a worn selector gate and/or worn pivot bolt. Was the clutch properly aligned at time of installation?

I agree with you about parts and warranty and mark up... I tend not to worry too much about parts failing (hasn't yet) and have faith in the skills and care taken by the mechanics I hope for the different jobs that have needed doing. You do have to look around for someone who is honest...

Cheers.... hope this helps.
