Default Centre Diff Lock

Now, i'm not all that well minded when it comes to the mechanical bits on my TJ. I turn the key, it starts. If it doesn't start i get someone who knows where the engine is to have a look. (I think the engine's under the bonnet right?)

Anyhow's i hear that the Landrover Discovery's are getting their centre diff lock back and that's obviously a good thing.

Now i was reading in my TJ manual that when in 4L:
Quote:
Four Wheel Drive Low Range -
Locks the front and rear driveshafts together. Forces the front and rear wheels to rotate at the same speed.
Does this mean that TJ's have a Centre Diff Lock? I was under the impression that they do not, but the way that the manual words it - i am unsure now.

Default Centre Diff Lock

Hi,

TJs don't have a centre diff at all. It is either 2wd or locked 4wd. Thats it. Your TJ also has centre locked in high range 4wd too.

Only some Jeeps have centre diff and/or torque split, TJ does not.

Centre diff is for on-road vehicle "manners" only. It allows using 4wd on hard surface road for better traction without damage to driveline. On TJ you should only use 2wd when on hard surfaces.

It was a severe shortcoming in discos that they did't have locked 4wd centre. It is not an issue with TJ Jeeps, just an embarrassment for Disco owners.
Big news they now have a "real" off-road 4wd system.

Yup dxj's on the money....
I read a report on the weekend about the D90 and they were saying that with the centre difflock it "provided ultimate traction for real go anyway ability" ......
But what it really means is that is now equally as capable as a basiline part-time 4x4 (ie without a centre diff)

isnt the LSD meant to give you all the so called traction you need in a TJ. - such a load of crap as LSD isnt strong enough to stop it from slipping and allowing one wheel to lose traction.

LSD is only good for pulling crazy burnout and being able to hook it both left and right ways and getting the back to spin - ah reminds me of those days when my bro had a supercharged XR6 - oh did the lsd have a workout on that hehehe

on a final note - Well pffft to jeep, i want air lockers NOW!

HI,

All LSD are just traction "aids" you get somewhere around 20 to 30% torque split to spinning wheel when they are new, less as they wear. If that isn't enough, you go nowhere. Just imagine a 100% torque split LSD trying to do a U turn and you will see why they are actually designed to never work very well.

There is good reason people spend thousands on detroits or air lockers.

I think the guy with the disco thinks he has front or rear locker and is bragging to those who have as little understanding as he has.

Something like listening to a Subaru owner bragging about ground clearance off road
