The vehicles are good enough. Things go wrong, in my case definitely more in the Jeep than with any vehicle I’ve owned previously. But the Jeep is more complex than any of those cars, and I also ask a lot more of it. So for those reasons I say the reliability of the vehicle itself is “good enough”.
What’s not good enough is the sheer lack of product knowledge, initiative, or customer orientation of every Jeep service department I’ve dealt with. They just don’t give a shit about doing the right thing, and won’t come to the party until after they’ve made a mountain out of a molehill and pissed you off to the point you’re seeing red. Then, if you’re persistent, and get FCA and/or Consumer Affairs involved they might start to treat you like you’re not an idiot and actually get around to taking some responsibility for the after-sales experience. I’d prefer the old 3 year warranty with a competent dealer network than the 5 year one with the dealer network as I’ve experienced it.

Four Jeeps over the last 25 years 2 XJs ,currently a 2010 WH Grand Cherokee diesel plus 2011 WK Grand Cherokee Overlander diesel.
Only very small problems with any of them. The last 1999 XJ did 320000ks and I never even had the AT sump off, just changed the AT fluid every 8000klms!!Towed a cub camper most of its life. Always get any parts I need from US.I agree from personal experience that many dealers seem to be lacking in overall knowledge, however this applies to many makes and models.I also agree that Jeep dealerships are not numerous. However good independent diesel mechanics should be able to work on all diesel motors ,the same goes for auto trans etc.Of course continual off road work or towing a 3 ton van may/will effect any makes on going reliability.

Thanks all, appreciate your points. The Jeeps look like good off road vehicles but I don't seem many of them compared to Nissans and Toyotas, so good to hear from people that use them in their intended manner.
I had a chat with a Wrangler owner I met last weekend and he raved about his and hadn't had any issues other than being a bit tight on space. Also visited the local dealer on the weekend and was informed that the new Rubicon will only be available in 2.2l diesel, which is disappointing. Other than when off road, most of my driving is short trips so a petrol engine would suit me better. The dealer also advises that the new Wrangler is out probs March next year, possibly with more engine variants, etc to follow. Looks like I'll have to wait a number more months for a test drive...

There are several useful YouTube videos that test drive the 2.0L t v the Pentastar. I find the 3.6L petrol engine very responsive and have done some long distances with it. It is relatively quiet, powerful and un-fussed and it works well with the auto tranny. In the long run, my view at least is that the Pentastar will be easier to maintain if it is looked after regularly.
But, I love my XJ 4.0L I6. It is the engine you have when you drive the doors off your car going across the full span of the country, several times over and in some very rough terrain, without it raising a sweat.

Hello from the USA...
we have 3...
'98 ZJ Grand 4.0, old Chrysler era, owned since new. Simple machine so I was able to do most repairs myself. Original 4.0 six untouched, except for tune ups, had auto trans re-sealed at about 80,000 miles, replaced rad, water pump, fan clutch, thermostat myself about 8 years ago, had AC evap and heater core done in the shop. All other maintenance and repairs I did myself,
'07 WK Grand Limited, Hemi with QD-II, owned since '09, has been more reliable than the '98, far fewer repairs although it is much more complex. Hemi power bests anything Toyota offers in the US. By comparison the 4Runner is reliable but dull.
'17 JK Wrangler, 3.6 with 6 speed, son's Jeep. Owned about a year and a half, 20,000 miles, so far very good reliability. I'd go with the 3.6 for sure in the Wrangler. In the US the engine is considered reliable and well thought of, it goes into nearly everything Chrysler makes.
