Default 4.7 Engine Temps

I had this conversation with Hoobz while doing the Border Track not long ago but it got cut short due to his radiator blowing.
Just wondering where everyone's gauge sits on their 4.7.

I replaced my radiator and thermo last Xmas, she's been running fine since but the gauge fluctuates a bit, usually sits in the mark to the left of half, but on slow 2nd gear , not even steep climbs etc it will climb to a hair over half and sometimes make it to the mark to the right of the half mark. Is this normal?
It comes down straight away when back to normal driving or idling. Today through hilly backstreet on the way to a mates, 26 or so degrees so not too hot, it sat a bees dick over half and on half with air con on.
I have the hydro fan, fluids good, I can force it to take off more by applying 12v to the plug or discoing the temp sensor, so it seems to work properly.
I never noticed this gauge behaviour before changing the radiator, hmm. Car runs fine, changed oil last week before 1000k road trip, and it was black but good.
Could it be a dicky thermostat maybe?

Mines the CRD, so it's not exactly related except it also has the hydro fan. It behaves just like you described. On the long weekend, I did a long climb in 2-3 low range and by the time I got to the top it was at 95 deg C (I use an OBD gauge). It came back down fairly quickly at the top, but it had me worried.

Doing a bit more research, the hydro fan does not cut in until you his 210 degrees F (98 deg C). Until then, you only get the fan idling fairly slowly; unless the Ac pressure goes high (i.e. gets hot) which also triggers the fan to cut in.

Haha, it was a shocker hey, and it gets me thinking about the engine kicking it, hmmmm, especially when I was 600k,s from home last week, haha!
I've just read about the timing covers chewing out where the water pump is, stuffing up the flow, although it looks like a dog of a job to do

Hmmmm. Thanks for the heads up (no pun intended)

I'll have to look into everything to do while I have it in pieces here.
