Gave the shed a much deserved cleanup and decided I need to start stripping the 8.8 so I know what I'm dealing with. Thankfully all the parts I need to keep are in perfect condition so I gave it all a degrease and went about making a cradle for it to sit on. Can't see it in the photo but it has a removable pinion stand so I can rotate it around of fitting gears. Also cut off all the old mounts, brake line tabs and the abs sensor protective fins and started cleaning back the tubes....

After doing some research on the web I came across something I'd never read about the 8.8's before and it had to do with the oil return ports from the axle tubes and the fact that it's not uncommon for them to be missing from either side? I checked mine and it turns out I'm missing the drivers side! So I'll rectify that while it's apart. Photos aren't the best but you'll get the idea....

Not a big deal it can still drain back through the bearing somewhat, but handy thing for anyone building one up.

Nice detective work there Holmes, maybe you could smooth that rough bit up a bit Rangers, the sharp & rough edges they leave in castings gives me nightmares.

Yeah apparently it's quite random and can be either tube! It's actually the arb install manual that makes reference to it and it's the first id heard of it. I hadn't read it before I pulled mine apart but it made sense afterwards as to why that tube was full of crap and the bearing was ordinary and the seal was leaking. Nothing the grinder can't fix!

Ordered pretty much everything for my axle swap and re gear over the last few weeks. I've also made a template for a full length truss and drawn up plans for my traction bar and crossmember... Unfortunately I've had zero spare time to actually do any fabrication! Victor from SBR was nice enough to special order a whole swag of yukon gear for me so I've got 4.56's,install kits, axle bearing kits, carriers ect.. For front and rear that should be here in about six weeks.

The quality and service from ruffstuff couldn't be any better! I think the diff cover would easily withstand a bomb blast!! Not to mention my new u bolts are 5/8" should be able to torque the shit out of them!
