Default MYxxxx v. VIN v. build date v. compliance date

Please school me

Jeep MYxxxx v. VIN v. build date v. compliance date is confusing me .

For example: 2009 Jeep MY2009, compliance date 05/2009, VIN xxxxxxxxx8Y123456, build date 1/3/08 (guessing 3 Jan 2008 depending on date format used).

My understanding of the last 8 characters of the VIN is:

1. Model Year (8 = 2008, 9 = 2009, A = 2010, B = 2011, C = 2012 etc)
2. Assembly Plant (C = Jefferson USA, Y = Steyer Austria)
3-8. Vehicle Serial No. six-digits.

So is the example really a 2009 MY2009 or a 2008 MY2009 or actually a 2008 MY2008

Should the VIN Model Year match the MYxxxx designation or the build date?

When buying a Jeep, what is the date to consider i.e. which is used to determine price/trade-in value etc.?

Cheers,
Dave.

That sounds correct and is also the way I understand Jeep's VIN identification. VIN xxxxxxxxx8Y123456 would mean manufactured 2008 in the Steyer plant.
Dealers will always advertise the vehicle as the year of registration/compliance (because it sounds better/newer/more valuable ?)
They really are sleazy pricks like that. When I purchased my 2005 WH GCL it was advertised by the dealer as a 2007 model (that was when it was first registered in Australia. I pointed out to the dealer principal "Hey, the VIN says it is a 2005 model" ....well he reacted like I had defecated in his lunchbox. "This is a 2007 compliance" he said....."this is what we do in Australia " !

Needless to say he/they will see no further business from me forever & ever, amen (even though I did purchase the vehicle)

Model year is the year it was bolted together, so it's an 08 built in Austria, mine is an 04 but didn't get here until 05 and has an 05 compliance plate so the rego says it's an 05 but it's a WG.

Yep, and when (if) you trade-it-in they'll say it's a 2005

So is it an MY2005 or MY2006? Jeep seem to have a 'sucker' method of naming a model one-year ahead - get your MY2014 now

It's not just Jeep, it happens with all vehicles manufactured O/S, Jeep aren't that bad as the shipping time from plant to show room is quicker than some like Toyota etc, they can spend quite a bit of time sitting in a dockyard waiting, well the cars do anyway.
If any vehicle had a build plate of 05 and a compliance plate of 07 I would be asking questions, like where was it in 06 ????, actually I wouldn't touch it.

Right - so the one in my example, built Jan 2008, was then 'shipped & stocked' until May 2009 - about 16 months old before some poor Oz bought it, probably thinking it was a 2009. As you say, I think that Jeep Oz have had a faster turn-around lately.

I note that you quote 04 in your siggy even though the compliance lists it as an 05. As I said before, I presume that if you were trading-in a dealer would then also call it an 04 until they then re-sell it as an 05 Am I being too harsh?
