Avoid that bloody inland by-pass road at all costs if you can. You can easily go around Hook Point at low tide and it's even possible at high tide but the going's slow & tricky in places. It would be better to park up for a few hours and have a beer while waiting for the tide to drop than take the by-pass.
That gravel by-pass road is the most potholed, corrougated piece of s**t I have ever driven on; with all the money the QPWS rake in through camping and access fees you'd think they'd at least grade the thing every now & again. Was forced to drive along it last October due to high tide and a big storm surge that made the beach around Hook Point impassable, and I nearly shook myself and the Jeep to pieces. Spent an hour afterwards in the carpark at Inskip point under the JK with a wrench tightening up all the bolts and fastners (trackbar, pitman arm, sway bar, side steps, fender flares, etc) that had been shaken loose by that horrible road. That road in a solid-axled, firmly sprung jeep is no fun at all.
