Default Jeep J10 engine options

Thanks all
As far as I can tell if it didn't have a v8 option from factory then putting any v8 in will require an engineer certificate

My understanding of the law in NSW is that if the engine is from the same family ie. AMC and bolts in without body modifications then you can increase capacity by 30% without an engineers certificate. That makes the AMC 304 V8 a viable option because it bolts up like factory and is only a small capacity increase. Problem is finding a 304, and technically your not supposed to use an engine that's older than the vehicle, most 304s will be older than most Aussie j10, not that anyone would pick it.

Next option is a 4.0, you can rebuild a 4.0 with your old 258 crank and make a stout 4.6 or 4.7 stroker. That wouldn't require engineering either.

Personally I think the SD33 is weak as piss, even with a turbo it doesn't really make any more torque than a 258

The stock 4.0 HO motor in a J10 would be pretty handy I think.

I love the idea of strokers but it's a lot more complicated than just swapping the crankshaft - while I my engine was half dismantled I considered doing it but all the "recipes" require some big$$ investment in custom parts. I'm sure a 4.7 litre engine would be loads of fun but let's just say it would be more of a "look what I did" fun (and expensive) exercise than bang for buck practical.

Tha 4.0 would have to be the best bet.
Gary Hammond had one in his J10 and he said it went very well.
The SD33 is very gutless.

I have been offered a 5.0L EFI ford V8. Does anybody know what would be required to make it fit in a J10?

Mine had an SD33. Massive "home made looking" mounts that were horrible. We got real FSJ J10s with 360s so as far as VSS is concerned (in WA at least) you can go right ahead and register it with no headaches or engineering whatsoever. That's what I've done. Click image for larger version

Chassis is 3/16" on the truck and about 7" longer than the Wagons. They were only 1/8".
Engine mounts are bolted AND welded on both wagons and trucks.
Anyway I'd suggest a 3.8 Commodore V6 with a 4L60E and adaptor to the TC from Nova or Advance. That will make you smile being relatively cheap, highly effective and should be straight forward for the engineer. Brakes and suspension on your truck are huge which is where some problems typically lie. Click image for larger version
