What Jeep do I drive?: XJ
Default Info on converting XJ from Diesel to I6 Petrol

My XJ has done some heavy duty wheeling & is getting a bit tired in the body but I have some awesome memories of the trails I've driven & the friendships I've developed so I want to keep the soul of my XJ in my next project.

I've found a 99XJ Diesel with a stuffed motor & I want to use the 4lit 6 & transmission in this project. I know all about the drive train conversion bit, but what I need to know is more about wiring etc.

Do I need to swap in the main loom as well as the engine wiring/computer or are these inter-changeable with the main diesel loom?. The donor Six/AW4 is out of my 01 Classic so has the 4x O2 sensors & Coil packs.

I'm going to swap in the petrol fuel tank, canisters, fuel lines etc but will retain the diff's & transfer case(nice to have H/Duty T/case & 3.73 Diff's)

Any first hand knowledge about this conversion would be appreciated

Cheers,

AL

Al, last time we spoke you mentioned that you were wanting to set the next one up as a tourer and as such I feel you would be better off retaining the 242 xfer case instead of the 231 as the 242 allows full time 4wd that you won't get from the 231 which is really useful for long runs on dirt roads.
You will need to change all the engine bay loom as everything under the bonnet will be different.
I can't imagine much from a diesel being compatible with the petrol, for starters the battery is on the wrong side etc.
I reckon you will also find that the under bonnet aircon system will need to be swapped over as well.
To change the dash loom will not be a major task when considering all the rest that you need to change over....

Having done engine and gear box swaps in the past (I have not always worked on Jeeps) I would be looking at the mountings for the xfer case xmember position and you will most likely need to change the engine mounting brackets that attach to the chassis rails as well but that is easy to determine by looking up the parts manual....

If you weren't so far away I could give you a hand....

Cheers, JJ

Yeah thanks for the heads up Steve.

As I'm not going to run a/c, I'll be converting the compressor to endless air to operate air tools etc.

The battery box thing is good coz all the engine bay will be changed so Diesel Battery Box will be holding the 2nd batt for my Warn winch coz I have the air filter in a different place anyway. I've been run 2x 75/80amp Deep Cycle SLA batteries in the back to run the Inverters, frig etc & don't wait them to be used unless its a long winch.

What model did you get your 136amp Alt from?

I'm going to keep the Lock-Right Auto Lokka in the front diff so I haven't used Full Time 4wd for 3 1/2 years besides I'm an old rally driver from way back & being sideways is just more fun.

I'm keeping the Hack'n'tap so I'll get the front driveshaft lengthen 80mm & I'll have the H/D Slipper for the rear shaft.

As we have talked, this project will be my touring truck with all the body armour & the new front bar I built with the Warn on top.

Sent the old 96XJ to the scrap man yesterday so I'm down to Bad_Blu & the Green Sport update(its gotta go soon too).

Thanks again mate....AL

The 136A unit was from a Zg, I don't think that they are standard though as I have had 2 Zg's and only 1 had the bigger alt and they were both 96 Limiteds.

I am on the look out for some update front doors with the glass, mechs and trims if you happen upon some in your swapping....

Yeah well as you know mine is pretty straight so I won't be doing a full door swap, just internals.

Do you have a copy of the FSM and the parts catalogue for the years you're looking at, it can help as far as finding out what components are shared between the petrol and the diesel such as looms, cluster etc....

Cheers, JJ

Al I was a little bored today (still off work) so I had a look through the parts manuals to see what may be different.
The clusters are different but the dash looms appear to be the same.
The under bonnet looms are different (obviously)
The floor pans are the same so that is good news (I have seen some cars that have different floor pans for autos and manuals)
The engine mounting brackets that attach to the chassis rails are also different.

I hope this helps some...
