Default VM 2.5 dielsel help

Hi everyone,

I have a problem with my XJ Jeep turbo diesel (which I love). Here’s the problem it will start and run fine and will sometime drive ok for a short period, however after a while it will blow large (and I mean large) amounts of black smoke and lose all power. I have changed the air filter, fuel filter cleaned the egr valve, changed the turbo hoses and checked the turbo fan all seem to be ok.

If I have done it properly I have attached a video of the engine running. The smoke it blows is very minor compared to how bad it actually is. I guess I am just after an expert opinion to confirm the timing chain. Could it be a head gasket ( I would assume would idle rough if a head gasket).

I am also having trouble locating a timing chain kit so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

As far I'm aware there is no timing chain . There are only timing gears in the td . I would say check the injector no.1 needle sensor wiring for continuity .
Also have a look in your engine bay and try to see if there is any of the loom wiring rubbing against the chasie or against any accessories . If all ok than add 200ml of 2 stroke oil in your diesel tank at fill up .
2 stroke oil helps with injection pump internal lubrication.
Black smoke means over fueling . It could be injector(s) or injection pump
not sure about this one .... Is the "Check engine" light comes on when it happens ???

Black smoke = over fueling or bad spray pattern.
Not a HG or head issue. Not a valve timing issue.
#1 injector sensor fault would cause a lack of fuel, so unlikely to be it.
Black smoke can be caused by poor injector spray pattern. You could try some injector cleaner or have the injectors tested. They may need new tips.
I cant see the video you mention.
Is the fuel you are using good quality, fresh & clean? poor fuel can cause issues. In the Autumn around April/May when fuel composition changes I sometimes see a minor black smoke problem with mine. Run tank nearly empty & fill from a different station (more expensive) & problem goes away.

Thanks Layback40, I do choose reputable fuel stations when filling up (not that this means a lot) I also run injector cleaner through about every 3 tank, unfortunately the video is too large to attached and I am not sure how to reduce it.
It is a difficult one and the mechanics I have taken it to are also just guessing. I have a friend that owns a diesel injector shop so will pop out the injectors and get him to overhaul them and see how I go.
Once again I really appreciate your help.

What you should do is have him 'pop' test them. This allows him to look at the spray pattern & make sure they go off at the correct pressure. If they are bad on spray, new tips needed, if just low on pressure, they can be adjusted. A full rebuild will probably cost several $100 each. I am at around 340,000km on one of mine & not showing injector problems.
