Now when removing the old carrier remember to take note of the bearing cups, mark them top and which side there on cause there supposed to go back on the same side, can't see why it matters but its what they say

You may need the diff spreader to take the carrier out, mine suprisingly came out easy by itself, I'll take a pic of the spreader tomorrow. I actually think my diff has been played with before, I noticed it had toyo bearings in it, I'm sure jeep would of used timiken from the factory which is probably why the carrier came out so easy, not enough bearing preload.

In a couple of days I'll take the pinion out, take note of the engravings on the pinion head cause this will help with setting the shims so the pinion is set up on centre of the crown. My new one is 0 and the old one is +2. This isn't a definate reading just somewhere to start, it will tell you wheather to subtract or add shims that are already there.

The other thing to remember is where to buy your parts, if you take your time and arnt in a hurry eBay is your friend, I got off eBay:

Dana spicer 4.1 gears and install kit for dana 30 for $275
Superior 4.1 gears for dana 44 $150

Rockauto is we're I got everything else and is we're I get most of my parts, there price is stupidly low and they arrive in 3-4 days

Just found the graph to work out the pinion depth shims, the old one is +2 and my new one is 0 so I have to add 0.002" worth of shims to whats already on my old pinion, that should give me the perfect depth or very close but the only way to tell is with the contact pattern.

My 44 had the pinion offset marked on each set as they were both Dana. I believe some manufacturers don't mark the offsets. In that case, from what I've read, a pinion stack of .0042" for a D44 is a good place to start. Since your new set is marked 0 it'll be interesting to find out what your final pinion stack is. I built my own case spreader too. I know a lot of people don't use them from what I've read on jeepforum.com, but I figured I'd rather have it and not needed it that need it and not have it.

The very best of luck with this, I have read many "non" pro attempts at this on the US forums, and it seems to go fine.
But on that note, you never hear the bad side of a build on forums. You are 100% correct with the right tools, it doesn't seem too hard…I personally do not have the minerals to give it a go. But I can't wait for your attempt. Please include heaps of photos especially when you are doing the ring and pinion teeth pattern.

Cheers
Dave

This time around I think it'll go smoothly, the dana 30hp I did previously was a major pain, I had to start from scratch. I bought a bare housing and all the pieces from eBay as a lot and doing the whole thing from trial and error was a bitch. I eventually got there but from memory it took at least 20 goes at setting the pinion depth, at least this time I have a starting point.

I'll pull the pinion out tomorrow and hopefully if I can get into work I'll press the new bearings and shims on and see we're I'm at. Fingers crossed adding the 0.002" will be right
