Wrong end of the keyboard.....

B&M make a thermostat too, but it's probably a rebadged Permacool (or vice versa).

The oil leaving the transmission will be at the same temp as the transmission, so an inline temp gauge pre-cooler will work. Keeping it as close to the box as possible will help ensure accurate readings.

I always understood that the the transmition oil went from the sump through the pump, around the gearbox lubing the pistons, solenoids and belts and providing hydrolic pressure to various galleries.
then back to the sump, or on to the torque converter, where it gets smashed and it is the torque converter where the vast majority of the heat goes into the oil.
It then goes out to the cooler.
So, again as I understand it, the temp of the oil going out of the box to the cooler is the temp of the oil after it has been through the torque converter- torque converter temp.
Whereas the temperature sensitive components of the trans get its oil from the sump.
Apparently the ATF is perminatly damaged it if goes above 140c a in line temp gauge could be used to manage that aspect of it although I would think a light or buzzer would be the go if that was your primary concern.
not trying to start a pi$$ing comp here just discussing ideas.

for the Trans fluid thermostat
My local parts place wanted $180 AUD (B&M)
rocket industries wanted $90 for a perma cool ex the USA
summit racing have one for $45USD + Postage (perma cool)

Yes apparently it is, but heat rises and the shift lever is cooler than it's ever been and besides I did say it was an unscientific method of comparison didn't I?

Rainman I believe you would be very close to the mark on how the system works. This is why you would not really want to put the temp sensor inline before the cooler as you would be reading oil temp of oil that has been worked and heated. By reading the Sump Oil Temp you are measuring the oil temp of the oil before it goes into the system again and gets reheated/reworked.
This is why some people put in larger sump pans to try and disapaite the heat within sump longer so that you can have the system use even cooler oil.

I want to know how hot the transmission is at it's hottest point thus the pre-cooler sensor

I would agree with you Junglejuice. After all, the oil in the sump and its current temp are what will be going through the components in the transmission. And will also reflect the temp of the oil after it has been cooled if any.
