check engine light ?

I have a check engine light on and was wondering what is the preferred way to find out what set it off.
Its on a 2000 XJ petrol.
It happened last and I disconnected the battery and it went away.
Back again today.
seems to load up at idle if you leave it for a while.

If you don't have any problem with the jeep, just leave it for a week and it may go away. Check all the fluid levels of course. Scan tool is your other option.

Get a $10 OBD I/II bluetooth dongle off ebay and use an android device to scan for fault codes. Plenty of programs available for android, but Torque for $4 is pretty feature packed and user frendly.

A code reader with Live Data is a good tool, also for future reference, and can be bought for under $30.
If you don't have one, I think SCA offers now the 'service' to have your codes read, not sure if they ask money for this.
Any OBDII reader will be able to read the post-update codes, you could drive up to a (friendly) shop and ask them the favor to read your code, its really a 1 minute job.

I had the XJ read and a code 141 came up.
has not reappeared as yet.
Just looking in to 141 now.
