Afternoon all and hello as my second post!

Well after a long history of owning landcruisers I have just converted to Jeepdom as of yesterday afternoon with a completely stock JK4DR owned by a soccer mum.

I'm currently talking to www.4wd.com for about $3k worth of goodies but the big question always comes down to tyres. Namely 35s. I've always run 33s on all my fourbies and am very aware of the regulations and all the changes to NCOP (been following the drama for years).

But are they out in force for big tyres these days? I don't think I've ever seen a sting set up in Brisbane but have read the odd story or two. Is anyone seeing them or experiencing heat from the fun police at the moment? Or should i just grab 33s and a second set of 35s for those 'special occasions'...

From VSB 14:

4.2.4 Overall Nominal Diameter
The overall diameter of any tyre fitted to a passenger car or passenger car derivative must not be more than 15mm larger or 26mm smaller than that of any tyre designated by the vehicle manufacturer for that model.
The overall diameter of any tyre fitted to:
 4WD passenger vehicles specifically designed for off-road use (typically MC ADR category). All wheel drive (AWD) vehicles including those AWD vehicles that may be certified as MC ADR category, (also commonly known as soft roaders) are not included in this category;
 4WD goods vehicles and their 2WD equivalents if the chassis and running gear are essentially the same as the 4WD version (N ADR category); or
 any medium weight goods vehicle (NA2, NB ADR category).
Must not be more than 50mm larger or 26mm smaller than that of any tyre designated by the
vehicle manufacturer for that vehicle.
Note: Increases in tyre diameter are subject to compliance with all other requirements specified under this clause (Clause 4.2 Non-Standard Tyres and Rims) and may therefore be limited by other factors such as insufficient clearance.
Speedometer accuracy must be maintained for the selected tyre and rim combination to within the degree of accuracy specified in ADR 18 where applicable. It is suggested that the degree of accuracy is in accordance with the most recent version of ADR18.

50mm is maximum 'allowable' diameter, and seeing as Jeep Australia doesn't placard a maximum allowable size like many other manufacturers, it seems they max out around 33"

This also means that inspectors (police or vehicle registration inspectors) have to calculate which is an offense and which is not. At 35" there is minimal calculation required once they figure out that the stock tyre size is closer to 31".

Insurance companies mostly won't insure you with 35" tyres on either, unless the vehicle is engineered to comply with all the ADRs in relation to rolling balance, ESC control, speedo correction, vehicle dimensions, protrusion outside the guards, etc. depends on which state you're in though.. QLD are most militant.. NT are a breeze in comparison.

Thanks NTRubicon,

Yep you're definitley correct. As you've said - QLD are most militant, has anyone seen them around or had run ins recently? 33s may just have to be the way to go if so...

Couple blokes at work received letters for supposed defects without ever being stopped. Basically saying come get inspected to prove your innocent, if you don't your rego will be cancelled.

3k worth of goodies to run 35s reliably and safely seems well short of the mark for a stock Unlimited from all reports. Just run some 33ish / 285/70/17 and be done with it. Put the price of the second rims and 35s into the rest of the steering and suspension instead and it'll likely be better equipped and more capable anyway.

Yep that's the more sensible way of thinking about things MDK. Subscribing to Petersons 4x4 has ruined my expectations!

33s and a ~2.5" lift are really the limit unless you want to starting spending over $10k.

And unless you're doing off-road comps or inherited a million dollar estate it's just not worth it in my opinion. Especially, if like me, your JK is a daily driver.
