God this sounds the same as my crank sensor issue I had... I'd say do the sensor... It's had its service life.. if not, pour water down the back of the motor and try to start it again.

Hi, take your fuel filter off, see how much crud comes out. After a year sitting around you might be surprised how crappy the fuel is, particularly e10. Very similar symptoms to what I had, tank had rusted badly fuel filter clogged, ended up replacing fuel pump as well.

Just trying to track down the pickup coil at the moment. Called around and either no one can get one, or places like Burson reckon they can.... For $230. Might be a dealership or online order for this one sadly, just too obscure a part - the guy at Burson was pretty surprised when I got spark plugs for the XJ, says they never sell those any more and no one with these Jeeps ever really comes in. Maybe it's just those prices, yikes.

Actually I have a replacement fuel filter in my shed, I guess I should just get that done while the car is in downtime now. It sat for a year about... 3 or 4 years ago now, but since then I've replaced all the parts mentioned in my original post and run many tanks of premium through it, so I imagine the fuel is good! But the filter, well, 290k kms, wouldn't hurt really.

Bursons can get cheaper versions of stuff... Just ask... they quoted me $200 for a crank sensor for the xj, then I asked and they got me an $80 one... Otherwise rockauto is the best.
And the plugs are basic champion plugs aren't they?? My repco had it all in stock.

I would be inclined replace the entire dizzy ebay $178, given the way things looked, they can get worn on an old motor, which should include all needed parts (I think)...check the sensor wires very carefully for splits/damage..wiggle it to see if the motor stalls, XJ wires can be "bad inside"

Definitely thinking I might just replace the whole lot - have money coming in just over a week from now and I'm going to hit Rockauto for a whole lot of parts. In the mean time, I took the dist cap off, cam sensor (coil pickup, your choice) and cleaned everything up - the cam sensor ribbon cable was a little kinked where it exits the sensor itself, so I straightened that out and reinstalled it in a way where that won't happen. I've done a couple of shorter runs to the shops and back and so far, zero issues. I need to do a horse feed run today so that will be the big test - sure hope it doesn't die out on me at 100kph on the motorway with a full load of hay!! Hah...
Can anyone tell me, from my pictures on the last page, does the dist cap button look worn to you?
It's practically flush with the plastic housing. Maybe this is also to blame for some of the erratic running? Thinking I should just pick up a dist cap locally in the mean time to be safe.
