Default 2019 Jeep Wrangler Pickup and Wagoneer Light Signatures Snapped at Dealer Meeting

2019 Jeep Wrangler Pickup and Wagoneer sema 2016According to our sources, Jeep showed off some early styling renderings of its upcoming SUV lineup at a dealer meeting, and one brave attendee snapped a few contraband photos for the world to see.

We’re most interested in two vehicles on this so-called “Jeep Brand Lit Signatures” board are the Wagoneer fullsize SUV and Wrangler JL, found on opposite ends of the graphic.

On the board, one could very easily overlook the upcoming Jeep Wrangler JL, due for the 2018 model year.

That’s because it seems to be styled very similarly to the current Wrangler JK. That’s a very good thing, as it shows that Jeep will continue the legendary off-roader’s heritage into the next generation. The cloudy silhouette still clearly shows separate front fenders, an upright windshield, and a high-clearance front bumper, with round headlights framing a relatively narrow seven-slat grille.

The dead giveaway that proves we’re looking at a JL is the array of LED lighting, including narrow strips that wrap around the front corners of each fender, the twin foglamps in the front bumper, and the dual-element headlights.

Also suggesting the JL is the rear view. Although it looks like any other Jeep Wrangler at first blush, a closer inspection very nearly proves that we’re actually looking at a pickup, which Jeep has already confirmed. The other silhouettes on the lit-signature board feature each respective SUV’s rear glass and D-pillars, while that of the Wrangler shows a conspicuous dark space (like a bed), leading us to believe we’re looking at the tailgate of the much-anticipated JL pickup, expected for 2019.

The only aspect of this hypothesis that’s giving us pause is the presence of the tailgate-mounted spare tire. If Jeep wants its first pickup in two decades to be usable, the tailgate should fold down, not swing out, to provide added space for long cargo, and that big spare tire might make the tailgate difficult to operate.

Down on the other end and featured next to the Grand Cherokee, the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer is obviously much larger than anything else in the current Jeep lineup. A broad version of the company’s seven-slat grille stretches wide between two angry headlights with seven LED elements each.

Below each headlamp is a two-LED driving lamp, with a lower grille opening that features tow hooks and a tough-looking skidplate. It’s a bold, premium look that takes familiar Jeep cues and moves them upmarket slightly.

The taillights mirror the headlights’ shape, with a similarly shaped skidplate on the rear valence. A wide license-plate housing suggests this large Jeep may be destined for foreign markets in addition to the U.S. Although it’s hard to tell for sure, the D-pillar looks a bit more upright than that of the Grand Cherokee, which bodes well for third-row space and cargo room. The Wagoneer’s size and positioning in the lineup all but guarantee it will be a cushy, comfy ride for all passengers.

We’re excited with what we see coming up for the Jeep brand. We hope the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are as attractive as these initial images might suggest, and if it’s as large as it looks, it should be a much better family SUV than the poorly regarded Commander of the last decade.

And we’re relieved to see the Wrangler preserve so much of its unique styling and personality, augmenting them with a few modern touches. And the prospect of a JL pickup still makes us salivate. Will the 2019 Jeep lineup be as attractive as it looks here? We sure hope so.
