Default Mickey Thompson ATZ 5 Rib

Has anybody got the MT ATZ 5 rib tyres fitted to their WH Grand? The closest size is LT 265/70R17 which is 23mm larger in diameter.
The advantage is that they are an LT rated tyre with a significantly higher load rating (119R).
One is whether they will miss "the bolt" and secondly do they give a harsh noisy ride. I was told that due to the Jeep's monocoque construction they are very harsh riding and viabrate back through the body.
Any feedback would be appreciated as on paper they seem to be a good choice.

G'day Darwin Dave,

That 265 only size is wrong.

I have Mickey T ATZ's on my WH Grand the size is 245/70/17 they are very quiet, handle well and so far i'm very happy with them. I have only done about 5000K's on them but it includes city and towing on 3 trips.

There is no issues with that bolt and if i remember they are about 24mm rolling diameter larger which brings the speedo back to spot on.

Feel free to contact me if you need any more info.

Peter.

Thanks Peter,

You are correct, 245 not 265, my typo. The LT construction is an attraction giving superior sidewall strength. I also tow a van in the order of 2t fully loaded and with about 210K on the towbar.
A guy from ARB in Brisbane was the one that said that they were noisy and because of their LT construction, jarred back through the car. I also thought that the speedo was slightly under and that the increase in diameter which equates to about a 3% increase in speedo reading would put it about right.

Cheers

Dave

Hi Dave, I'm chasing tyres for my WH CRD as well for the same reason as you - Cape York.

My first set of Cooper AT's on my KJ were terrific & quiet, however, when they were worn out I replaced them with a set of ATR's that were markedly noisier and I was extremely dissapointed with noise only not performance.

I too have looked at Mickey Thompson ATZ 5 Rib 245/70R17 and wondered how you went with them??

Two of my "neighbours" have just been to the "tip" one with 4 ribs and one with 5 ribs, it was very wet and technically closed in places, they has no difficulty at all and spoke very highly of their tyres.

My main concern is missing that bolt and "rough ride" on LT tyres although that's the attraction too, will be interesting to hear your take.

Don't forget to call in and see me in Townsville on your way up in July - hopefully with a snorkel - cheers johnv

hi darwin dave
I've fitted 245/70/17's 5 rib ATR's to my 2004 WG & there is a small increase in road noise but i had Hankook's in a highway pattern on befor so i knew they would be a bit of road noise. If you are concerned about road noise turn the stereo waaaaaayyyyy up and just rock out knowing that you are driving a kick ass 4wd.

Wardy, sounds like great, practical, advice, unfortunately there is always the question of "she who will be obeyed" to consider, perhaps my name should have been Rumpold.

To put it in plain english if the lady pays for the tyres, she gets to have the music down low and reasonably quiet tyres.

Have you got yours yet Dave?

I put some 5 rib ATZ's on the wife's XJ in 245/75/16 around 2000k's ago.

Very happy with them, I don't class them as noisy. The ride very nice for a LT construction. Good grip both dry and wet roads...

I've heard good things about how well they wear, so overall I reckon they're a good choice for mainly on road use.
