Default Steering Clicking Noise

Ok so after a rough couple of weeks with the XJ, Harmonic Balancer, 3 days later split a PS hose and then a week after that i had to replace a rear uni now i have a new symptom!

I have a clicking noise when i turn the steering wheel left or right, it only does it once each way as long as i continue to turn the wheel it doesnt do it again, but if i stop then continue to turn it will click again.

I jacked the front up last night and it does not do it at all, so its only with load on the front end.

It sounds like its coming from the steering box? Are they adjustable? Can they be shimmed or do they need to be rebuilt?

I should also add that the pitman arm and tie rod could both do with replacing and i will do so, but the noise sounds like its from the steering box, although i know noise can travel.

No i didnt run the steering pump or box dry when i split the PS hose.

Anyone had anything similar or offer any advice

Thanks Kev

Might not be it. But my jk does it from the tie rod. The stabiliser resistance causes it to rotate when changing from right to left or left to right occasionally.

A few things can cause the clicking. Ujoints, balljoint, steering gear, tie-rods, wheelbearings, etc.
Did you have somebody else turn the steering wheel while you were under there? So you can focus on where the clicking is coming from. Also get your hands on things, feel for play/unusual movement etc.

This sounds to be the cracked chassis rail at the steering box recall. I'll find the threads relating to it and post links.

Also check where the panhard rod bracket attaches to the chassis. Mine was slightly loose and that cased it to move when under load causing a knocking sound. Even tightening it didn't help, I had to remove and clean it and retention the bolts before it stopped.

As said above get under there while someone else steers and you'll be able to find it.

Have been under there while someone turns the wheel left to right and its coming from the steering box area.

Its an update and has the spacer and i cant see any cracks but will check again.

There is a small amount of play in the pitman arm and tie rod.
