Default Trailer lights without ignition
Trying to find any info on regulations for trailer wiring. My KL with factory tow pack only has power to the trailer light controller with ignition on, so on the side of the road with hazards on I need the ignition on for them to work.

Dealer tells me thisnis normal but I can't see it being legal?

Anyone know better?

Automotive and trailer lights come under federal ADR's.
I don't think your situation is legal.

This document states Hazard lights must operate when the towing vehicle is displaying them.

Yeah thats the same info I found and the same conclusion I came to - though I can't find anything to confirm it. I don't really want to call QLD Transport as from past experience I will get a different answer each time I call

I might call around a couple of reputable trailer places. Not sure if it's something that is checked by a roadworthy or if they would even know.

Besides the legality of it though its bloody stupid... I only found out when I turned on the hazards on the side of the road with the van on the back! Every time I have tested I still had the engine running.

Well hazards must work on the vehicle at all times and the trailer must display them too. Simples.
That makes your setup illegal.
The installer of your trailer lights' setup must make good.
I can see some sh1t hitting the fan.

Yup. Will be interesting as they are factory fitted and apparently same in NZ from what I have been reading. Though did read tonight that a NZ counterpart changed the fuse for the rear power socket to change it from ignition to always live and his came good, so will investigate that b4 hitting up the Dealer.

Well I heard from the Dealer this afternoon and had I recorded the young lady I would have posted it in the Jokes section.

Apparently the trailer lights will normally work with the ignition off, but because I have fitted an Anderson plug this makes them only work with the engine running......

Service Manager not back til Monday so will drop in and see him I think!

And just to round it out I changed the fuse for the D pillar power socket from Ignition to Permanent Power as per the owners manual, and same as US models the trailer connector is now live all the time. I even stated this to the service girl yesterday and she said nooo, that wont work.
