I had a local garage service the car, he ordered the oil and parts from Repco and was half the price of Jeep.
The guy knows his stuff, I quizzed him on the oil and filters and he did use 5W/40 instead of 5W/30.
When it comes to a major service, I will have to check out what it entails, but realistically I can't see why a decent mechanic can't carry it out if they have the parts.

He probably used 5w-40 instead of 5w-30 because it is cheaper to buy.

5w-30 is often recommended by makers inmost newer makes because it improves fuel consumption and reduces emissions compared to the thicker oils of old.

They usually specify the light oils but allow the use of one or 2 grades heavier oils as an alternative.

I know it makes a measurable difference in real world driving as I too have occasionally used 10w-40 in lieu of recommended 10w-30 in my wife's cars and the average fuel consumption according to the vehicles trip meter climbs to 8.2L/100KM from the long term average of 8.1L/100km. Invariably when I return to 10w-30 at the next service it reverts to the long term average after a couple of weeks.

Just be careful which 5W-40 oil the mechanic uses in your DPF equipped diesel. Need to use DPF compatible oil.

Wish I looked into this before my 40k service. I just wasn't expecting the service to be almost $1000 just for swapping out filters and oil.

I haven't looked yet but has anybody on here gone through the trouble of compiling a list of the part numbers for the filters to make ordering the filters easier? Might be a job for me when I get some time.

I also noticed the oil change indicator on my car was still showing 60% remaining for the oil when I dropped the car in for service. I assume this is based on time not kilometers?

Oil life indicator is explained here, it apparently takes usage patterns into account:
http://www.wk2jeeps.com/wk2_oil_indicator.htm

In Australia they don't take any notice of the oil life indicator, they just make it 6month/10k intervals (or 12month/20k intervals for 2017+)

There is a bit of info on part numbers in the thread I linked above:
http://www.jeepgarage.org/f190/wk2-a...aus-87414.html

I believe the new wesfil oil filter for the 2014+ CRD is WCO201

Yeah definitely pays to shop around mate. Western Filters in Sydney were doing a filter package oil/air/fuel filters for around $125 from memory.
