What you need to do is either unplug the correct trans connector near the dipstick and measure the resistance of the lockup solenoid (and compare the other solenoids) between the pin, and battery negative terminal, should be ~13 Ohms

If it read high, you have a defective solenoid...or wiring

You can also read from the TCM connector (or trans connector), without disconnecting them by using a sowing pin as a backprobe

I have had trouble with my lockup solenoid, which is still not working.

I have established that although the solenoid reads ok, the wire between the solenoid, and the connectors appears to be bad.

This means I have to once again remove the pan, and establish if in fact the wire is bad, whether I can bypass it, and how

both my TC solenoids read ok on resistance, and appear to work correctly when 12V is applied, I have had the little bastards out and in my lips.
A new one is $70 form my auto trans specialist.

I may order one just in case, as my XJ is a daily driver

dropping the pan can turn into an ordeal

( think I have a thread on this topic with pics)

Otherwise, just fold the seats down and leave it that way. The storage boxes would be SO good to have though, I always have tools and gear, a fire extinguisher, ratchet straps, lamps etc in my heep and they're just rolling around the floor down there...
I'm going to get some hardwood veneer board from bunnings later in the week and trim it down to fit. Then I guess I just need to work out the supports to give it strength, and cut / hinge 'lids' out of it on either side to turn the rear foot wells into storage compartments. I can see it all working in my head, it's just going to be a lot of stuffing around and swearing at things and I gotta build the motivation up first

:
Most of the time I run with the bottom portion of my rear seat removed,
and with the top section laid down flat, I have 6ft of level cargo space with no gap between rear seat top and front seat back

There is space behind and under that area for lots of storage

I could leave the full rear seat in & folded, and fit a custom plywood storage approx 5" high, and still have a full 6ft ( or slightly more), of flat cargo space

The rear plastic mouldings can be cut & modified to give quite a lot of storage, I have seen many pics

Question; I am seriously contemplating mounting my spare direct to the roof via 4 ratchet straps to the roof racks when I need maximum space, with matting underneath (trips where I sleep in my vehicle)

Is there any reason why I should not do this ..spare weighs 25kg

No issue with spare on roof rack.

Just be careful of height if going into a carpark like an underground shopping centre ect... on my TJ a spare wheel on top would be too high for my local shopping centre.

Weight in terms of lifting up and down I would be careful of. 25kg’s is ok but easy to injure yourself. I’m a gym junky an coupe years back compacted a disc on a day of just light weights. Turned my head to say hello to a friend just as I was lifting above my head. It was way less than 25kg.

Are you sure your spare is only 25kg? I’ve got 315 MT’s on my 15” rims and I’d guess substantially heavier than that.

Spare will be on the roof itself, lashed to the racks.

Good point on the height, I will measure it exactly, its slightly lifted
I am guessing it will come in around 193cm

it weighs 24kg, 255/70/16 on Ford Explorer teardrop alloys

I really like the lightness of the unsprung weight, they are less than stock Jeep 15" steel wheels & tyres

You are right about the lifting situation, I'm not a young guy anymore, Id better test my standing press capabilities, with the awkward shape.

in a worst case scenario, I can wrangle it up onto the bonnet, then the roof
its not something I have to do all the time

If you have a carport or similar, you could rig up a cheap pulley system to lift the wheel and then drive the car under to lower it onto the roof.

If you get a flat on the road fingers crossed a Good Samaritan might stop and help you get the wheel down.

Took the old girl out for a refill of Premium Unleaded 95 this evening in the howling rain and deluged roads. She had been sitting in the garage for two weeks with an almost empty tank after a previous long trip.

I am gobsmacked how this car glues itself to the road in FT 4WD and remains unfussed in any weather.
