Howdy all, I drive a KJ so I dont know much about wranglers.

I'm trying to decide between 2 different wranglers to buy, anyone who has an opinion please feel free to express it.

1. 2009 JK with arb front bar, tow bar, 2 inch lift, about 70,000km
2. 2006 TJ with arb front bar, tow bar, winch, arb rear bar, front & rear lockers and about 70,000km on the clock. Dont know if the TJ has a lift or not.

Both have soft and hard tops good rubber and both say full service history......so which one, should I go for the 2009 JK because of it's is newer tech and nicer inside or the 2006 TJ because of all the extras??????
Does the TJ have any trouble with the transfer case cable slipping off?
Does the JK have anymore useable room inside the cabin?
Looking at keeping the car for 3yrs then upgrading to a JKU

And comments from wrangler owners would be great.

Hey Agisfang. A quick question for you. Are you replacing the KJ now with a 2 door Wrangler or will the Wrangler be a second car?

Good question Mudpig. Also what size tyres on each? Check the TJ for lift. What sort of lockers are they?

But generally it would depends on your use. Assuming they are both 2 doors, do you want it as a daily drive, or an off road plaything? If its the latter be hard to go past a double locked TJ (a 2 inch lift would be nice with that) as a hell of a lot of fun and most capable off road. If you are touring round town with the family, JK may win out.

I only ask because if you intend to replace the KJ I would wait a year or two and then go straight to the JKU.
This will prevent you from being disappointed with the lack of cargo space in the 2 door. But if you intend on keeping the KJ then it doesn't matter. I'd then be looking at the locked up TJ.

Well having lived with a KJ CRD for a long time, and driven my son's 2008 JKU CRD in all sorts of situations, I think I know both pretty well.

If your replacing the KJ with the Wrangler, you will be disappointed - with it's on the road manners going just about anywhere. The short wheel base is not a touring vehicle. The JKU is better on the road but long touring trips are much less doable than in the KJ. Surprisingly the differences in offroad capability is not as great as you might think. A properly equipped KJ will be able to stay with the solid axle vehicles most of the time; It's only when you get to extreme articulation requirements that the solid axle has advantages. On the Old Telegraph Track (Cape York) the KJs in our trip had no problem what so ever keeping up with JKs, TJs, and Xjs. The KJ rear axle and 8.25 diff is as good as any in a Jeep and the front end has surprising reach (over 8" of strut travel in stock config) and that coupled with Brake Locked Diff traction control narrows the gap on the others. On corrugations the KJ will be way out in front in comfort while the JK and TJ will shake you to death.

I agree that if you have to make that choice that the JKU is a better choice than the shortys (JK or TJ). I'd stay completely away from TJs unless your trying to build up a dedicated offroad vehicle with limited on road use.

Between those two vehicles I'd go for the JK. I personally wouldn't buy a late TJ because of the OPDA problems they have. Just google Jeep OPDA and you'll see what I mean.

It can be fixed fairly easily -eg http://northshorejeeps.forumotion.co...tj-opda-issues
Whilst I disagree with Glen about the differences in offroad ability between the TJ/JK & KJ (I think it is WAY more than him), it is nonetheless a big change in type of vehicle. I love TJ's (nearly as much as CJ's ) but living with them everyday can be a chore - especially if there's more than one person.
There is very little room and you need to assess what to carry every trip.
Best idea try and get an extended drive/time with each.
