Default Rear Diff swap to a Dana 44

has anyone put a dana 44 (rear tj) into a xj?

my main concern is breaking a rear axle and having the wheel walk off, so from my understanding a dana 44 will not do this?

any help appreciated guys............

you proberly find a 44 from a TJ easier, think they have a similar track width.

CJ diffs are not all 44's, lots of them are AMC?? not too sure..

the 35c is held in with a C-clip at the diff end, and if it breaks, the wheel and axle will come out...

1, you'd be doing damn well to break an axle.. :D
2, i cant remember how the 44 are put together...

Why dont you just convert your D35 to disks like I did and then you will not loose your wheel due to the calipers holding them in place!

Jimmy
The dana 44 has plate that bolts to the flange on the axle tube this plate has the bearing and bearing retainer sleeve behind it so you have to demolish the bearing to lose an axle. I can get you in touch with a guy who could build you a diff to what ever specs you want for a reasonable price if you are really interested.

well i dont know what the track on the 44 is compared with the 35 i have. obviously it would be nice to put a 44 outta a wrangler renegade so i get disks also, but depends on track again.

does ya XJ have ABS?
there are ABS tone ring, sensors on the rear axles...

if you change you'll lost those tone rings and you might not have ABS anymore.. unless you have those tone rings reinstall in the TJ 44 axles. dont think TJ's ever came with ABS... not sure if the 35 axle shafts are competable with the 44 either so you might not ba able to re-use ya axles shafts..

also, heard from jeep guy that the speed sensor reads off the tone ring on a XJ... i pretty sure its not the case.. but might worth double checking.. i thought the WJ speedo reads off ABS, anyway im not sure whats happening there...

just a heads up dude...
