Dave,

I'm sorta thinking about this for if/when I ever neext to run the wifes volvo over that sorta distance......
As I said I think using a few of the smaller containers, a big ply board or somthing underneath so they are't rubbing on the roof, then ratchet strap the suckers neatly inplace......then you have NO chance of vapour buildup.......

Hmmm...the red plastic jerry's...i take it back, keep em' outside!!

the black RHEEM ones are good, but the red ones bow the sides out easily. With one in the back you should be ok.

Wooders, i saw a pajero with 10x5L black rheem jerry's on the roof on Fraser. It looked good and they were tied down very well but that's a lot of weight up there!!!!

The only problem with on the roof is isnt it illegal to carry fuel up there??.. Ill see if I have the reciept to swap it for some smaller ones in case I need to use the roof.

The reason I got the red one Willows one over the black one (cant remember the brand) is the red one seemed to be more sturdy than the black one..

Leaving tonight.. 3am.

Yup - Polly's right.

It's illegal to carry it on the rear .... in case of a rear-end shunt.

These questions beg to be answered:

1) Why do Kaymar and other aftermarket manufacturers still produce rear-mounted jerry mounts?

2) Why have I seen Army mogs rumble by with fuel (or at least jerry's) on the rear? (Maybe it's water)

3) Why has no-one thought of producing under-slung jerry can holders that hold them securely under the vehicle instead of long-range tanks? Nice, heavy-gauge steel boxes bolted in with a sealable lid or something.... can't be any different from a fully-fledged aux fuel tank... can it? Stick one up in the "rafters" between the tail-shaft and a chassis beam... on the side opposite to the exhaust...

army rovers have protection plates that stick out further than the jerries do. with the holders from Kaymar etc I dont think this is so... also I suppose they make em to put water jerries in

Dave - I know it's stating the obvious, but it's amazing how many people carry the reserve on the roof and come home with it still there. As soon as you figure you've used a whole 20L in your tank, stop and top up from the Jerry. That way you've only got about 150km of driving for any of these things to go wrong, not a whole day of shaking around and vapour leaks, etc etc
I'm with Wooders - I tend to go the 10L jerry on the roof as needed. Check your tie downs after a few ks.
