need help ASAP Fuel issue
Hi everyone,
I know the 4.0l arnt great on fuel but mine is beyond pathetic
I have just done 75klm and have chewed down 25L of fuel.
the car sort of chugs and has hardly any acceleration then put your foot down it clears up for a little bit,
I have the 2000 Xj 4.0l with the 5sp manual.
now last week I got 180k out of 25L but the buy the end of the week the consumption went through the roof.
the week before it was using a little more than it should aswell
it has
new plugs and lead,
new dizzy cap and rotor
new O2 sensors
just did the fuel pump (thought that may have been the issue)
I don't have much time to sort the issue (Thursday) and have little funds, could it be a sensor on the intake or something
when cruising at 110k in 5th the instant fuel reads at 39l/100k, I drop it back to 4th (3200rpm) it goes down to 20l/100k, I think the higher revs help burn the extra fuel pumping into it??
it smells really fuely too

Just brainstorming.
Could it be the pressure control not working & so causing too high rail pressure?

Try reading any codes?
Could be your TPS or your MAP sensors.
4.0 litres can vary significantly as in two of mine that were similar had a 40% difference in fuel usage. But the thirsty one went harder?

Cat converter blocked? I don't know how you would check it other than cut a hole in the side and look in there with a torch. We just had that issue where a bit of crud from the cat had broken off and blocked the output pipe.
