The truth is... I have no idea what the actual issue is until I get the cover off.
doesnt sound very encouraging for using any part of the old diff

pretty sure the axle shafts need swapping to have the tone ring
check the thread by Alex VSB 14, think he does something
or search Google or NAXJA..summary, its a bit of a bitch swapping a non-abs rear end into an abs truck
(if you want abs, and no light)

if its petrol, I think all standard diffs are 3.55, simple way, just count pinion and axle turns

my friend that has rebuilt uncounted diffs showed me several D35 diffs he had in his shop to rebuild, and showed and explained to me how the bearings become completely worn out, and need to all be replaced

Can you further explain this? I reckon my replacement d35 is just starting to make 'whooping' noises at 70kmh.... I'm gonna have to do something about it soon.

And anyone ever had a d35 rebuilt at a diff joint? If so how much would I be looking at? Round 1k for bearings?

Cheers.

It sounds like the replacement is a diff out of a diesel. They are a different ratio. That is why 2 different diff ratios have been mentioned.
Not an easy change as the uni joint on the diesel is different. Dont know if you can just swap the pinion yoke to overcome this.
You may be able to swap the axles & overcome the ABS issue that way.
I am sure some one has done a diff swap like this. Maybe Junglejuice did it & put 16" wheels on his XJ a few years ago. Would be worth a search of his posts to see what is involved.

Are you saying that a diff without wheel sensors is likely to be out of a diesel? If so i can only hope that the issue is with the spider gear and look at swapping carrier only as I'm not going to put in a wrong ratio

Jump on eBay, $170+ bucks (cheap!) for 4 TIMKIN bearings, no crush nut but. Melbourne based.

If its out of an XJ, YES!
I believe all Petrol XJ's had ABS & I know diesels did not. For the update ones I am sure. For the pre update petrol I believe they had ABS as well.
If you put the diesel ratio in the back only, it will probably go bang soon after 4WD is selected unless you change the front diff as well.
If you look at the yoke of a diesel diff you will see its bigger than the petrol ones. This is a way of telling them apart if there is no identifying tag.
It may be worth checking with who provided the diff.

Son has a 97 and a 2000 sport petrol without ABS.
I know early model limited had abs , not sure about after 2000 models
