Default Hella H4 Headlamp water leak

Hi All, I have had this recurrent problem whereby the pax side head lamp is taking on water during the extreme wet.

This has been an ongoing issue where on average I have been replacing the driving light bulbs 3-4 times a year.

The headlamp unit was purchased a few years ago as I thought replacing the factory one which had the same problem would fix it. I even applied silicone sealant around the unit but that did not fix the problem.

Is there a water course that is allowing water into the H4 unit?

By contrast, the drivers side H4 unit is fine.

Ummm, is this a known issue?

Must admit that's a new one on me, is the rubber seal fitted to the rear around the bulb?

My guess too. Swap the rubber seals from drivers side to pax side and see how you go.

I'm not fixing it, I'm improving it!

I am still having this problem where the bulb on the pax side is failing. Like Junglejuice, I have never seen any rubber seal on my XJ headlamps since new, but I know they exist as a product (code GH126 647-01). I am going to buy my second aftermarket headlamp kit that includes this rubber seal/cap as my current (second pax side) headlamp has collected too much dust for me to worry about chasing after the seal separately. My drivers side lamp has never been replaced and still looks like new. It has no rubber cap or boot behind it. I hope to report back that this finally solves the problem. I have new looms and the problem was also occurring before the wiring was changed.

Both my XJ's have the rubber boots on the back. They are a grey color & a bit of a PITA when changing globes.
One thing I have done is to put a layer of clear packaging tape over the glass. I have cracks in the glass of one. I get the impression that having the tape layer on the glass reduces the likely hood of cracks from stones, havent had a cracked glass in the 4 years since doing it. The tape lasts a couple of years & then becomes brittle. I have it on driving lights as well. There is a lot of stone damage visible to the plastic when pealing the old layer off.
