What Jeep do I drive?: KK
Default Spare key didn't work

Hi everyone,

We did a bit of camping over the weekend and accidentally left the keys in the tent when we packed it up. Car was all loaded when we realised what must have happened.

No probs (hmmm) - went for the spares (dutifully looked after by the other half) but they didn't work. Car cranked over and started momentarily, but engine then immobilised. We had to unpack the car (in mid 30's heat no shade), open up the tent, retrieve the missing keys, and pack it all up again.

Lucky we didn't really lose the keys otherwise we would have been well and truly stuck - out of mobile phone range too.

Talked to dealer today - all fixed. Was told you need to use the 'spare' from time to time or it gets out of sync and is treated as a rogue key (and immobilises the engine). Advice is to use spare occasionally and have all keys checked at each service.

Just thought we'd share!

Cheers, M&G

Keep one key for everyday driving, and the spare for off-roading without all the crap usually hanging on the key ring. Last thing you need is all that swinging around knocking you on the knee when going through the ruts. This way both keys get a decent use as well.

Cheers Vlad ...

Those that read the manual will know about this. I find the key and seat memory binding very handy! Gf key is bound to setting two, mine bound to setting one. Nice incentive to keep both keys active.

Yeah the seat memory is definatelly handy. Dont know about your Gf, but my wife is a bit shorter than me, so if I forget to press memory 1 after she has driven it, the steering wheel gets closer very quickly, specially if I've already got my seat belt on.
